Access to Hagg Wood: Update

A metal two-step stile at the entrance to Hagg Wood.

As many of you will be aware, the recently confirmed public right of way from Intake Lane to Hagg Wood is now open and available for the public to use.

Although much of the route remains the same, you may be surprised to find a new stile where it enters the wood. This has been introduced to ensure the route conforms to the description in the definitive map modification order (DMMO) of a “locked vehicle gate and stile” at this location.

Legislation states that the route has to be added to the definitive map in the condition it was in when the qualifying use occurred (in this case, 1977 to 1997). The evidence presented at the public inquiry by the people supporting the confirmation of the order was that for most of that period (1977 to 1997) there was a stile beside the gate into the wood.

Although the stile meets the latest British Standard (BS5709:2018) for structures on a public right of way, Dunnington Parish Council is aware that the stile is not accessible for wheelchair users, families with pushchairs, dog walkers, and people with limited mobility.

We have been assured by City of York Council that everything is compliant following a site visit and that they plan to work with the landowners to make the public right of way accessible to all members of the community.
