Dunnington Parish Council

No 10 Bus Service

A bus stop in Dunnington.

At the Derwent and Osbaldwick Ward meeting hosted by City of York Councillors Mark Warters and Martin Rowley on 31 August 2023 two guests, Michael Howard, Head of Active and Sustainable Transport at the City of York Council and Cllr Peter Killbane, Deputy Leader of the City of York Council and Executive Member for Economy and Transport, also attended to specifically answer questions on the future of this particular bus service.

There were also four Dunnington Parish Councillors, including the Chairman, and also a Councillor from Stamford Bridge Parish Council, together with a representative from York Bus Forum in attendance as well as some 100 residents which demonstrated the extent of feeling over the concern for the future of this important and vital service to the village.

It was explained by the City of York Council that First Group, who run the service, are saying that it is not fully viable as a commercial operation due to a significant fall in passenger numbers. At the moment the service is being partly subsidised by the City of York Council on the back of funding received from the Department of Transport for York’s Bus Service Improvement Plan, details of the Plan can be found on the City of York Council website by typing in City of York Council Bus Service Improvement Plan, together with contributions from East Riding of Yorkshire Council and North Yorkshire Council.

So far as the City of York Council are concerned this will provide security of the service in its’ present form through until the end of December this year at least. In the meantime the City of York Council are inviting comments and suggestions on all the bus services in the city so that they can prepare a report and make recommendations to the Economy, Place, Access and Transport Scrutiny Committee meeting in November this year.

So if you want to make any comments or suggestions on anything in relation to this matter, especially the number 10 bus service, you can do so by sending them to buses@york.gov.uk, or by letter to West Offices, Station Rise, York, YO1 6GA, as soon as possible but by the 30 September 2023 at the latest.

It goes without saying that the more submissions made, no matter how trivial you consider them to be, the better. We need to be as proactive as possible and in addition to making submissions it is important that we use the service as frequently
