Transport assistance for elderly and disabled residents

York community minibus

York Wheels is a local charity providing transport services for the benefit of elderly people or people who have mobility problems. The charity has been working to help the residents of York for over 35 years. All their drivers are DRS checked and wear PPE both during and after journeys. York Wheels are currently working with Nimbuscare Ltd. to assist in the transport of elderly residents to the COVID-19 vaccination site at Askham Bar, York.

York Wheels run two services with the support of City of York Council:

  • York Wheels – a volunteer car driver scheme where customers can book a car in advance to collect them and take them to their destination, such as a hospital, dentist, or podiatry appointment. All of their drivers are volunteers who use their own cars to provide a door to door car service for elderly people or people with a mobility problem and who cannot access public transport. A small charge is made to cover the drivers fuel (approx. 50% less than a taxi).
  • Dial & Ride – a bus service which takes over where public transport stops, providing travel options for York residents who are elderly or disabled and have no other means of travelling. With friendly, helpful staff they offer a door-to-door service taking you from home to major supermarkets and shopping centres. Drivers will assist passengers with their shopping, and buses are equipped for people who have difficulty walking and for those who use wheelchairs. The cost for concessionary pass holders is £3.30 (return) / £1.70 (single) (or £6.00 (return) / £3.00 (single) otherwise). Visually impaired pass holders travel free. Carers also travel free if the customers has an exempt Carer card for travel. Due to COVID-19 they are limited to six passengers on each journey and seats must be booked 24 hours in advance.

Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, York Wheels are currently undertaking essential transport only. They are also operating a cashless system. Car driver scheme customers must pay in advance via credit/debit card at the time of booking. Dial & Ride customers can pay via credit/debit card on the day as each bus has a card machine.
